Health, Harmony, Home

My new housemate, Kerry, posted this on the fridge to welcome me into my new home. She knows me already!! Smiles...

First, a little article that includes harmony and me: The Joys of First Friday Art Walk Come from More Than Art

Right now in my life I'm reflecting a lot upon how we tune the instruments that we are throughout our lives. I'm thinking about how our journeys, including the difficult passages, can prepare us so well to be useful to others.

As a very current example, I've had a long journey with health. I seem very healthy, I know, AND there's just been something not right for years and years, even though I make really great choices around nutrition, etc. Pain, fatigue, inflammation, toxicity, poor acid/alkaline balance, likely issues with glutathione. (Gluta-what?! Yep, you have it in every cell. It gets depleted by various forms of stress, including what you think of as stress and also things like toxins, heavy metals, processed foods and a whole bunch of other things. It decreases as we age, as well. It's our body's main antioxidant... it's crucial.)

So, I just kept digging and digging and learning - and learning - and learning... And guess what...?! I might have gotten to the root cause of it all by taking the DNA test that I recently took. My methylation and acetylation systems don't function properly. Again... huh?! We're talking about B-Vitamins, hormones throughout the body, proteins, the turning on and off of DNA that happens all the time every day. So, now I'm diving in to understand better how to address this new information in my life. Supplements and finessed food choices, etc., will enter my life soon. You can imagine how, because of this health journey I have been on, I have become equipped with much to teach and share.

While all this health stuff has been an ongoing sub-current in my life for the last - oh - three and a half decades!!!... I've experienced so many amazing things - and so many difficult things, too. That's how life is for all of us. If we choose to really be present for our lives and allow all of our experiences to hone these instruments that we are, then the blessings are many.

Over and over, we draw in nutrition and release toxins (aka that which doesn't serve) in all ways. We develop our skills, cultivate our gifts, learn more and more to step into all our moments with love. Gratitude and compassion become natural states of being.

Imagine that the instrument that you are has become beautifully formed and tuned with years of loving care and attention. When that is the case, everything that is breathed through you brings so much beauty to the world. Our work then is to step into our moments with love and allow ourselves to be open to the flow of how we can be present and fully serve THAT moment. What wonderful gifts arrive for others and also ourselves when we live in this way!

This quote is one that I often think of, about each of us being our most beautiful, bright light (Nelson Mandela quoting Marianne Williamson):

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others."

Yes.

So, at the same time that I am turning another curve in the river of health, I have just moved 20 miles from Freeport to Portland, Maine. What is even more consequential is the fact that I plan to actually be in Maine all winter. I'm taking the Permaculture Design Certification Course over the winter here and feeling that my home and heart is centered in Maine. I'm also establishing my Chaos-to-Clarity Organizing for Office & Home business, writing songs, singing, developing more music for healing, making art, writing prose and being grateful for many things.

See what a "permablitz" can look like when 31 people get together to transform someone's yard into a beautiful place where much food will be grown, and the systems are more resilient and self-sustaining... good stuff! November Permablitz

Here's a smaller permaculture effort that we just did in my own back yard - mulching to prepare the land for planting in the spring:

Another really interesting community support system that I've been getting actively involved with is a "time bank" called Hour Exchange Portland. It's such a great way to accomplish things. We all make various offers and requests online, and others receive or give in response. The key point is that no money is exchanged, and it doesn't need to be a person-to-person exchange. One person offers something to someone, and that person offers something to someone else. It's a powerful model that has been around for a long time. So far I've offered organizing services, given someone a ride, provided music and helped with an art gallery event. I've received a split box spring (yes, you can trade 'things' with time dollars, as well) and some artwork, and I have about 17 hours of credit to apply wherever would be useful in my life. I'm having an electrician come in and do a small job next week, as an example (a convenient outlet to plug in my piano/keyboard! :-).

So as I enter the winter season here in Maine, my highest priority is my health. When we have that, anything is possible. I wish for wholehearted, whole-bodied healing for each of you! All good thoughts and wishes are most welcome for me, as well...

Love and light,
Helena
